Sometimes a situation arises when the anatomical structure of the jaw and root canals does not allow the perfect filling of the canals to be done. If, after unsuccessful endodontic treatment, a tooth is still painful and the inflammation in the area of the tooth root has not subsided, resection is possible.
By resection of root tips we mean the removal of the tips of all the roots of a tooth. Resection serves mainly for the removal of inflammatory deposits that have moved to the root tips through the dental nerve and cannot be removed by conventional canal treatment. In some more severe cases, even the bone can become infected. Root-tip resection gives up to a 70% chance to preserve the tooth.
Course of the procedure
Root tip resection is usually a simple and painless procedure with local anaesthesia of the tooth. The course of the surgery is the same as for osteotomy (surgical separation of bones or bone spurs). However, in this case the root tip is ultimately extracted by removing the bone. To avoid endangering the stability of the tooth, the dental surgeon only removes the tip of the tooth root and cleans the infected area. If the tooth does not yet have any root fillings, the surgeon will leave the root filled with such a filling. Before the mucosa is sutured back into place, the root will be sealed from below.
